Biofeedback is the process of learning how to self-regulate physical processes such as muscle tension and blood flow. When a person has better control over their physiological processes they are better able to control their pain, anxiety and stress. Self-hypnosis training assists the patient on focusing away from pain or stress to decrease their perception of pain, anxiety or stress. Self-hypnosis training can also assist the individual in making behavioral changes such as smoking cessation or weight management.
Biofeedback and self-hypnosis training is basically the return of responsibility for one’s health to the individual. As these skills are learned, the need for drugs and/or more serious methods such as surgery may be eliminated or decreased. It allows self-regulation through increased awareness of stress responses and the ability to voluntarily control these responses.
Both biofeedback and self-hypnosis treatment is short-term, requiring an average of six to ten treatment sessions.
Biofeedback, meditation and cognitive-behavioral therapy are among the alternative treatments an independent panel of the National Institutes of Health has suggested as ways for millions of Americans to cope with chronic pain.
